I think global warming is a whole lot of hooey. First there were the scientists trying to justify their existence, and now Governments are using it as an excuse to raise more taxes and large manufacturers are getting on the band wagon to get us to pay more for products. What gets me is that the scientists can’t even agree on anything. According to some, the Earth has experienced warming and cooling cycles many times before, this is just part of a normal and natural climatic adjustment.

There has been a lot of talk about the building of bike ways, which is all too good but that is only useful if you only want to travel a short distance. For people who live 20 or 30 kilometres from work, it is simply not practical, not unless you are training for the Olympics. For the environment and to assist with congestion, it would be better to spend the money on public transport. If public transport was plentiful, reliable, comfortable and cheap, then people would be mad not to use it. Unfortunately all that costs money and it’s not good enough to insist user pays, not to mention counter productive. If you make it too expensive people won’t use it and the people using it are not the only ones to benefit. Maybe we should look at a congestion tax like what they are doing in London to fund it.

I have just read something interesting in our local newspaper that I thought I would share. Tuesday the 7th October 2008 at 6.30pm will see the launch of Redland Organic Growers Incorporated (ROGI) at IndigiScapes, Runnymede Rd, Capalaba Qld Australia.

It is being established by local gardener Emma Baker along the same lines as an established Brisbane based group (BOGI), which has been going for around 35years.

The Brisbane group have meetings once a month where a guest speaker talks about aspects of organic gardening. There is produce such as organic fruit and vegetables for sales, as well as seeds from a seed bank, books and a plant stall. Now Emma is looking to establish the same in the Redlands.

I feel anyone involved or interested in growing organically, or even the passive organic enthusiast in the Redlands area would benefit from going along.

For more information or to become a member, ring Emma Baker on 3390 3628 or email: ne.baker@bigpond.com
